Textile Industry Facing Shortage Of Skilled Labour: Indian Texpreneurs Federation

The textile industry in and around Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur and part of Bengaluru is facing  a shortage of labour, particularly skilled workers, a board member of the Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) Srihari Balakrishnan said.

Speaking at a recent function organised to distribute certificates and appointment orders in ITF member mills trained under the Skill Development Programme, he said that the Indian textile industry in the Southern region requires three lakh to five lakh workers at any given time.

Balakrishnan further said ITF has organised a job fair where 1,000 trained candidates were given certificates and 170 received appointment orders.

Giving details of the scheme under Prime Minister Kaushal Vikas Yojna, ITF convenor Prabhu Dhamodaran said in the pilot phase the member-mills have skill-trained 18,500 workers and for the second, it has signed an MoU with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to train and employ 50,000 candidates.

Tirupur Exporters' Association president Raja M Shanmugham said that there is a need to tap the real potential of the textile industry in India, which has only a four per cent share of the international market.
