Mag Solvics is launching some new products. Can you tell us more about this?
Mag Solvics has always been in lab testing equipment for the textile value chain. We have now decided to move forward into non-testing equipment too. The new product is our first step towards this. This equipment is especially for the spinning sector. Research and development is still on, it will take some time to announce the launch. Eventually our aim is to move into non-testing equipment for weaving, processing and garmenting too. In testing too, we are across the textile value chain, with over 130 testing instruments.
Which segments in testing are doing well now - fibre, yarn, fabric testing?
It is still fibre and yarn testing equipment that is largely in demand. We have seen a pick-up in fabric testing in the last few years. A.T.E. Enterprises has been our agent since 2009. Now they too want to be prominent across the value chain - from ginning to spinning to processing to garmenting. A.T.E. has asked us to develop such equipment in order to establish the market. Thus, in coming years, we too will increase our focus and sales volume in processing and garmenting.
A.T.E. largely represents leading foreign machinery makers. How did you fit in?
With A.T.E., our comfort level is more than 100%. There is no difference in treatment between a foreign and Indian player. We get a lot of very important feedback from our agent in terms of quality, new industry requirements, etc. That the partnership is working successfully, is also proven by the concept that we are working on - MAGNATE - an amalgamation of Mag Solvics and A.T.E.
What is Mag's focus on R&D?
With more than 130 products on offer, R&D is obviously the backbone of the company. As much as 20% of manpower is engaged in research and development. We have four divisions in R&D that work in complete sync - mechanical, electronics, software and secretarial. We have well qualified, professionally educated and trained expertise in each of the divisions, and they have the knowhow on the latest in their fields. This knowledge and skill is applied to the manufacturing of Mag Solvics products, thus ensuring that we deliver the most advanced technology. The proof of our technical prowess is in the fact that our products and the test results are approved and accepted by leading international agencies.
How do your products stand out amongst competitors?
As I mentioned, we offer state-of-the-art instruments that meet the most stringent of quality standards. We offer consistently high quality products, performance is guaranteed. We have been able to make our mark in the high end of the market, which is dominated by 2-3 players. Another plus for Mag Solvics is that we have end-to-end solutions. Our competitors may not have that range of testing equipment. In fact, we have certain innovative products which our competitors do not have. Being an Indian manufacturer, we are obviously price competitive. Our new logo - MAG Beyond Quality - says it all. Today, quality and performance is a given when one invests in a Mag product. We have moved beyond that, working in sync with the industry, understanding their requirements even before they do, and developing products well in time to meet this potential need. From offering end-to-end solutions to high volume instruments, we invest in studying market needs, and believe in being responsive. And this is what makes us unique.
Do you feel the need for technical tie-ups?
Not at all, as we ourselves are able to develop the latest technology products and market them successfully in India and abroad. Last year, exports accounted for 20% of our turnover. This year, our target is 40% turnover from exports. We have been receiving a lot of enquiries from Turkey, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, etc, for fibre and yarn testing instruments.
Tell us about your tie-up with PSG College?
From conventional textiles, we now want to move into technical textiles too. For this, we need to understand the industry, its requirements, product characteristics, what kind of testing instruments are needed for that. The tie-up with PSG College will help us in getting these inputs, as the institute is doing a lot of work in technical textiles. In 3-4 years, we will bring out a range of instruments for technical textiles testing.
Weaving is dominated by the decentralised powerloom sector. Processing too remains unorganised with only a few large scale process houses. Given this background, what is the focus on quality testing in weaving and processing?
Fabric testing is important today as it has to meet high quality and environmental standards. The organised sector has been using the latest testing equipment. What is encouraging is that the powerloom sector too realises the need for testing, and is investing in quality instruments. The same holds true for the processing sector. Smaller units are aware of the need for quality testing, starting with solvent preparation till the last process. For this, testing becomes mandatory. In Tirupur, every small factory has invested in testing instruments. The only difference in some cases is that while the organised players opt for automated testing equipment, smaller units may go for semi-automated products.
How has the market evolved for you over the years?
Over the last few years, business has increased manifold. We have introduced a lot of new products to meet the industry's requirements. We have, over the years, proven and established our reputation in terms of quality and performance of our products. We have introduced a concept MAG2020, wherein we want to bring out new, innovative products by the year 2020. Fully automated textile testing is the future, and we are working towards that. By 2017, we will have moved into the specialised segment of technical textiles testing.
What are your expectations from ITMA Milan?
We have very high expectations. This is the second time that we are participating in ITMA. The first time we were present only with catalogues. This time, we will showcase three products - for fibre testing, yarn testing, and the new equipment that is in the pipeline.
