SITRA setting up incubation centre for medical textiles

South India Textile Research Association (SITRA), which has a centre of excellence for medical textiles, will commission an incubation facility in by April 2016 to support new ventures in medical textiles. Prakash Vasudevan, Director of SITRA, confirmed the same. The dedicated incubation centre for medical textiles is to be set up at a cost of Rs. 20 million and it can incubate two units at a time for a period of six months to two years.

 

Medical textiles sector is growing at a rate of 13 to 15 percent in the country each year due to enhance focus on health care and more hospitals are using disposable products. Vasudevan also highlighted the SITRA’s tie-ups with some overseas universities for technology and plans more such agreements with research institutes based in Australia, Germany and Korea. So far, focus of the association was on the spinning sector which is looking at the value added sectors like weaving, and processing. Its testing facilities and energy audits are widely used by the industry.
