Apparel manufacturers in Tirupur knitwear cluster are keen on having the proposed Knitwear Board to be set up in Tirupur itself. "Considering that around 46% of the knitwear exported from the country originates from Tirupur knitwear cluster, it will be appropriate to make Tirupur the headquarters for the proposed Knitwear Board", said R Damodaran, joint secretary of South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association (SIHMA).
According to him, the head office in Tirupur will help the manufacturers to avoid travel to New Delhi frequently for representing the issues that confront the knitwear segment.
The manufacturers feel that a bureaucrat who could liaison with the Union Government should be appointed to look into the daily operations of the Board apart from the appointment of a Chairman.
