Shah Capital Grants US$ 80,000 To Support North Carolina Textile College's Hunar Project

The College of Textiles (COT) in USA's North Carolina state has received financial support for a unique women's empowerment initiative called the Hunar Project, from the Raleigh-based Shah Capital.

The project provides students in Raleigh with service learning opportunities and women in India with a chance to attain economic independence.

Shah Capital has gifted US$ 80,000, out of which (COT) will receive US$ 30,000 while the Association for India's Development (AID), an international nonprofit organisation which is COT's project partner, will receive US$50,000.

"We are very grateful for this wonderful philanthropic gift by Shah Capital. It will help us in our strategy to provide enriching experiences to our students and in our land-grant mission to bring economic prosperity to society," Dean of the College of Textiles David Hinks said.

Supporting the Hunar Project is a perfect fit for Shah Capital. "The gift aligns with Shah Capital's vision, which is to uplift underprivileged women of India to be self-sufficient by exposure to new ideas, as well as familiarise North Carolina students to diverse cultures for on-the-ground global learning experiences. The idea is to enable the growth of the project so that it might become a model which could then be implemented in other parts of India and other less developed countries around the world," Shah Capital's Founder, President and Chief Investment Officer Himanshu Shah said.

COT has been collaborating with AID for three years to support Hunar Project, a grassroots women's collective in Jaipur, India.

The project is aimed at the development of sustainable garments while training and supporting underprivileged women in the area.

The gift from Shah Capital will help develop the project's infrastructure and support several awards aimed at providing global service learning experiences to deserving students through internship opportunities and travel grants.
