Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani recently said that the Indian government has engaged with the industry to create standards for the nation’s technical textiles sector after she released a publication called ‘Standards On Technical Textiles’.
Speaking at a curtain raiser event of Technotex 2017 in New Delhi, she underlined the need to address the issue and also pointed out to lack of manpower in the technical textiles sector for which industry must first define the requisite skills. After defining the skills, it would be necessary to bridge the gap in which the industry would be supported adequately by the Government, she said.
She said that the industry needs to come forward and utilise platforms such as Technotex 2017 which is India’s premier international exhibition on technical textiles organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) jointly with the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The sixth edition of Technotex 2017 which includes an exhibition, conferences as well as seminars will be held from April 12 to April 14, 2017 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai’s suburb of Goregaon.
Irani said that agrotech and geo textiles must be represented at Technotex 2017 since these sectors have great untapped potential. She suggested that Technotex 2017 stakeholders should engage with agri institutes as well as urban local bodies to create awareness among them about the advantages of agrotech like less consumption of water, besides better productivity and environment-friendly sustainable growth.
Textile Commissioner Kavita Gupta, from the Office of the Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, said in her presentation, that there is a need for increased involvement of user institutions, development of indigenous specially fibres, development of standards, focus on research and development besides encouragement of joint ventures as well as attracting investment in manufacture of technical textiles machinery.
Ginni Filaments Managing Director and FICCI Technical Textile Committee Chairman Shishir Jaipuria spoke about FICCI initiatives for the technical textiles industry as well as Technotex 2017. He said that the sector was in need of skilled manpower, standards and regulations for transparent growth.
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Director General Alka Panda said that BIS has constituted specialised committees to expedite the process of developing standards for the technical textiles industry.
Panda urged the industry to actively participate with BIS and help in developing these standards, adding that the BIS is looking forward to industry’s suggestions on standardisation as this would spur innovations.
