The scheme is meant exclusively for workers employed in 1,000 odd units affiliated to the Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA), according to a senior TEA functionary. The scheme has materialised through a joint effort by the Tirupur Exporters Association, Edelweiss Insurance Brokers Ltd and the New India Assurance Company.

‘Mediplus 365’, which has been conceptualised exclusively for the Tirupur textile cluster, can be obtained by any worker in member units affiliated to TEA, by paying Rs 365 as yearly premium, which comes to Rs 1 a day, to avail of a medical insurance coverage of Rs 1 lakh and an additional equivalent Rs 1 lakh accident coverage, according to an Edelweiss Insurance Brokers Ltd official.

Those could avail of medical insurance for almost all diseases including cancer, with a few exceptions. Psychiatry related diseases and routine dental treatment are not covered. However, if the person has a broken tooth in an accident, it would be covered under the accident insurance component, the official said. The unique feature of the scheme is that insurance coverage starts from the very first date of premium payment, the official said.
