Officials of the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) and the Smart City Company, along with textile industry experts have begun studying the city’s potential as a possible readymade apparel manufacturing cluster.
“Experts have been consulted to chalk out schemes and develop projects as well as link these with policies and programmes of the state government and the central government. These plans and business development schemes are being formulated to attract investors as in order to generate employment,” Jabalpur Municipal Commissioner Ved Prakash said.
The Jabalpur Textile Village project is aimed at generating direct as well as indirect employment in the textile sector, under the smart city employment generation initiative, he said. It was an Associated Chamber of Commerce (Assocham) study which first mooted the idea in 2012. Recently, The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation released its SWOT analysis report which gave more impetus to the project.
A primary survey to set up an apparel village pertaining to availability of resources, technology for current status enhancement and facilities has already been initiated. Incidentally, Jabalpur has always been famous for its handloom clothes and sarees. Skilled labour is already available in the handloom and power loom sector, which has now begun manufacturing readymade garments besides doing embroidery work.
