Centre Ropes In Arvind Ltd To Skill Indian Youth For Textile Sector

Skill development and entrepreneurship minister Ananthkumar Hegde recently announced that over 20,000 youth from the country will be groomed and trained to work in the apparel made-ups and home textile sector by the year 2020. The skill development initiative is being undertaken by the ministry in collaboration with Arvind Ltd.

 

The minister said that the move is already underway with a beginning made in the city of Bengaluru to train 1000 youth in acquiring the required skills. “This move will be expanded pan India by taking it forth to other cities,” he added. The training initiative is being carried out under the aegis of the National Skill Development Corporation that is backed by the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana.

 

Arvind Ltd manufactures cotton shirting, denims, knits and fabrics. It was formerly known as Arvind Mills. Currently it is the flagship of the Ahmedabad-based Lalbhai group.

 

There is a significant demand for skilled labor in the textile sector as of now. In fact, it’s the second largest employment generator in the country currently.

 

The training tenure is envisaged to pan a period of three to six months and the job roles are aligned to the National Skills Qualifications Framework. At present, the skills are being imparted at Arvind’s training centres across the state.

 

"The youth will be trained to become specialised sewing machine operator, quality check executive in sewing line, packer, pressman and washing machine operator," said the minister. “All potential skill seekers can access the training. It envisages the age group of 18-35. Youth in this age group who are unemployed will be facilitated to acquire the training,” he added.

 

"Corporate India can be a major contributor to this nation-building exercise. The industry can utilize its expertise and provide relevant training to the youth in accordance with the demands," he explained.

 

According to the minister, “The training is expected to enhance productivity and employability and offer opportunities for the youth. In addition, it will provide ready talent pool to the industry.”
