Salient Features of Maha Govt.’s Textile Policy Objectives

The recent Maharashtra government’s textile policy slated for 2018-23 period had some salient points including the development of a fiber to fashion value chain and increasing mulberry and Tussar cultivation to increase silk yarn production and create a silk tourism corridor.

The government has also set its focus on setting up pollution free, and eco-friendly dyeing and processing plants in the state in addition to coming up with plants in all the cotton growing areas of Maharashtra. Non-conventional yarn like bamboo, banana, ambadi, ghaypat, maize, coir, will receive special attention from the government for purpose of promotion to enable farmers to double their income.

The government in its endeavor will be assisted in the technology domain by institutes such as the IITs, SASMIRA and WRA. These institutes are actively involved in carrying out research in the textile industry. These ambitious plans among an array of objectives are expected to generate employment to the tune of one million jobs in the forthcoming years.

On the silk front too, there is more to it than just encouraging the traditional Paithani sari. The government plans to create, promote and market the Adhyatmik Reshem brand throughout the state. On the wool front, the government plans to revive the industry in a big way from shearing to garmenting to marketing. Apart from the natural fibers like cotton, silk and wool, technical textiles too will receive focus and encouragement from the government.

As already earlier stated, the government plans to have special focus on processing, knitting, hosiery, and garmenting sectors to create an internationally competitive textile industry in the state.
