Ghana Workers Threaten Stir If Govt. Fails To End Pirated Textile Influx

The Union government in Ghana’s failure to clamp down on  pirated textiles has resulted in an outcry with the Coalition of Textile Workers threatening to picket outside Jubilee House in the event the government does not take proactive steps to put an end to this menace.

The association has given a deadline of May end for the government to put into action preemptive measures like deploying a task force to curb the influx of pirated textiles. The coalition voiced their grievance that it resulted in heavy losses for the industry and threatened to go on agitation if the government failed to meet their deadline.

Michael Anglangman, spokesperson for the Coalition, voiced his view to the media, stating, “As a measure to monitor what goes on in the market, the Coalition of Textile workers wants this anti-piracy taskforce to be in the market.”

He further said, “Failure for this to happen will force the traders to picket at the Jubilee House to draw the attention of the President to the urgency of their demands.”

In his opinion, “The official who briefed the President on their earlier demands didn’t notify him of the urgent nature of their concerns.”

It may be recalled that the Coalition demonstrated on the streets at Accra in the previous month. However, the demonstrators’ voice fell on deaf ears and this is prompting them to intensify their stir, stated the Coalition spokesperson. The workers’ main demand is that the government extends the anti-piracy task force from the borders to the markets.

According to the textile workers there is a heavy influx of pirated textiles in the Ghana market and this is resulting in the collapse of the local textile industry.
