‘Textile Act 2018’ Bill Placed In Parliament For Scrutiny

A new bill to usher in greater transparency in the textile sector has been recently placed in front of parliament. The bill titled ‘The Textile Act 2018’ endeavors to maintain quality in textile products of Indian origin to ensure that we don’t lose ground to our competitive neighbor Bangladesh.

The Bill was placed in the house by minister of state for textiles and jute, Mirza Azam. It has now been sent to the scrutiny committee for textiles for further inspection and reflection. The committee is required to submit its report within 15 working days.

The draft law promulgated in the Bill mandates that a directorate will be set up with a director general (DG) as its head. The director general will be appointed by the government.

According to the stipulation, the DG will act as the registrar and hold office that is mandated to inspect quality and standard of various textile products across the value chain. This includes elements like paint and other chemicals used in the textile processing stages.

The Bill further contemplates the government setting up a laboratory of international standards for testing purposes. Referring to the penalty clause, the Bill suggests that the registration of any company can be suspended or even cancelled for providing inaccurate information or false data at the time of registration.
