Designer Khadi products will soon find their way into dedicated spaces allotted to them in big retail stores. This will come into play as a consequence of the government’s bid to aggressively market indigenous fabric. The government move aims at poularising Khadi among the masses. This will come in as a boon to the artisans.
Union Minister for micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Giriraj Singh who was speaking at a press conference indicated that 800 villages will be converted to Khadi clusters for generating employment. “Our government plans to take Khadi out from Khadi Bhawan and showcase it prominently in the popular malls and retail chains.”
"People generally perceive Khadi as not fashionable and something worn by the older generation. Therefore we spoke to 30 retail chains like Big Bazaar, Pantaloons, W, Globus, etc. The outcome is that for the first time you will see exclusive Khadi corners with designer Khadi products in many of these retail chains which will add value. In the process this will also help the artisans," MSME Secretary Arun Kumar Panda added.
