Trucker’s Strike Results In A Spurt Of Textile Parcels for Railways

The railways have registered a whopping 30% leap in the regular shipment of textile goods parcels from Surat to various destinations in the country. This is courtesy the indefinite truckers’ strike that entered the sixth day.

The daily income of the railways has increased from INR 2 lakh to INR 3.5 lakh, according to officers in the officers in the department. Figures made available indicated that earlier to the strike there were 900 to 1000 parcels from the textile industry dispatched from Surat Railway station to various destination. In the six days ensuing the truckers’ strike, the quantum of parcels has risen to more than 1600 per day. This has significantly increased the income of the Western Railway.

According to Hiral Shah, Parcel Supervisor at Surat, “The influx of textile parcels has increased sincethe past six days  due to the truckers’ strike. Since the space at parcel office is small, we will have to keep the textile parcels somewhere else if the truckers’ strike will continue for long.”

He further said, “Most of the parcels are shipped to New Delhi, Ambala, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Thiruvananthpuram, Lucknow etc.”

South Gujarat Textile Processors Association (SGTPA), meanwhile, has issued a media statement that the truckers’ strike has effected a reduction in the textile processing job work by nearly 30%. According to the SGTPA president, Jiu Vakharia, “There is a huge loss to the textile processing industry due to the drastic reduction in fabric processing job work. The traders are not able to dispatch the parcels and no new orders are coming. If this will continue for long, then the industry will face lot of problems.”

Champalal Bothra the secretary of Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA) communicated in a media statement, “The truckers’ strike has come at the time when we have orders for marriage season in south India and orders for Rakshabandh. The entire textile trading sector has come to a standstill and goods worth over Rs 2,000 crore have piled up in the godowns and textile shops.”
