Shortage of trained workers is one of the major challenges faced by the textile industry. Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has been trying to address this issue by establishing a Sector Skill Council (SSC) for textiles and also large training facilities with adequate focus on mobilizing workers.
SV Arumugam, Chairman of CITI at the 55th Annual General Meeting announced that SSC covering spinning, weaving and processing has been cleared by the government earlier this month. “We have already initiated the process of setting up the SSC. It will be fully funded by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) through grants and loans and will help in developing proper course materials and standardizing as well as certifying training provided by various skill development organizations functioning for the products of its jurisdiction.”
CITI has also submitted a proposal to NSDC for establishment of training facilities for textile workers all over the country. Its focus is on mobilizing potential workers from the catchment areas, testing their aptitude for textile work and imparting basic training to the selected workers in the fields of spinning, weaving, processing of textile products. “This is expected to help the industry to substantially reduce attrition of workers, in addition to easing the tasks of workers’ mobilization and training,” added the chairman. The proposal is soon to be cleared by NSDC for implementation.
