CMAI To Undertake Size India Project

The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) will work with the Ministry of Textiles on the recently announced Size India Project, to bring out standard Indian sizes for apparel. Size India project was taken up by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) many years ago, but did not make any progress. With currently available body scanning and measurement technologies, the project could lead to conclusive results this time, with a wide database of sizes that CMAI will be able to offer. CMAI, with its vast membership of 3500 apparel manufacturers and 45000 apparel retailers from the across the country, is the most suited body to carry out such a mammoth project, as Indian sizes are very different from international sizes. In fact, Indian body shapes would differ regionally and communally. CMAI has welcomed the project, which will be immensely beneficial for the Indian retailers, apparel manufacturers, consumers and exporters. Apparel retail in India is valued at US$ 72 billion. Rahul Mehta, President, CMAI, stated that it is CMAI'S proud privilege to work with the Ministry of Textiles and Government of India to undertake this project. It will provide immense benefit to the consumers who will get standard sizes relevant to India, better-fitting clothes, and will thus avoid wrong and wasteful purchases. It will benefit the manufacturers, retailers, and brands by eliminating consumer returns and wasteful inventory. Mehta believes that this will also help them reduce overall prices which again benefits the consumers. It could also boost investments in the industry, as it could spur consumption as a result of more satisfied consumers. “It will help us to Increase our exports by offering Indian sizes to the Indian diaspora across the world,” he said.
