North East Receives Silk Bonanza From Union Textile Ministry

The Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani has given a generous bonanza to the North East sector by launching four new silk making projects across the states. The launch was done via video conferencing from the national capital New Delhi. The minister chose Meghalaya for inaugurating a Muga silk seed production centre at Tura. Her next launch was inauguration of silk printing and processing unit in Agartala, Tripura. An Eri spun silk mill was inaugurated at Sangaipat, Imphal. The fourth project was development of sericulture at Mamit in Mizoram. Simultaneously the minister inaugurated new office building to serve as Weavers Service Centre (WSC) ub Indore Madhya Pradesh and Kanur, Kerala. The minister spoke with the people’s representatives, farmers and officials informally and urged them to generate awareness among the masses about the government schemes like Mudra Yojana besides the recently launched income support programme for the farming community. She also laid stress on the awareness to be created about the Pradhan Mantri Sram Yogi Mandhan Yojna. The Center Silk Board has directly taken up Muga Silkworm Seed Production Centre (SSPC) at Tura in Meghalaya. The project aims at implementation of infrastructure creation in the North East under the aegis of Integrated Sericulture Development Project (ISDP). Muga Silkworm Seed Production Centre (SSPC), Tura, Meghalaya is one of the projects taken up directly by Centre Silk Board(CSB) for implementation under Integrated Sericulture Development Project (ISDP). The currently available infrastructure in Meghalaya is insufficient for meeting the market demand for Muga silk. The project will make the state self-sufficient for production and supply of Muga silk.
