Silkline for Textile Sector in NE India: Smriti Irani Inaugurates Rudrasagar Silk Mill

Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Zubin Irani inaugurated Rudrasagar Silk Ltd., - a spun silk mill in Demow town in Sibsagar district of Assam on 22nd February 2019. The mill is an initiative of Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India and is set up through a special purpose vehicle Rudrasagar Silk Ltd. under the leadership of Dilip Barooah, Founder CEO of Fabric Plus and a noted silk expert. Union Textile Ministry has taken up several measures to develop textile industry in the North East India using locally available raw materials and Rudrasagar Silk is the result of the initiatives. Assam has rich heritage of sericulture and produces rare varieties of wild silks like Eri and Muga silk. However, availability of weaver friendly and good quality yarns are always short supplied due to limited number of modern spinning mills. With this new spun silk mill coming into operation, which will produce high quality Eri, Muga and Silk blended spun yarns, local weavers will have be able to produce high quality, high value handloom products suitable for both domestic and export markets. The Mill has been set up with a capital outlay of Rs. 10 crores and have a capacity to produce 108 MT of eri and Muga spun silk yarn per annum, will consume 150 MT of locally available raw material and likely to create more than 5000 livelihoods including direct employment, silk rearers and handloom weavers in its value chain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsjHRHfzg9w Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Zubin Irani, inaugurated Rudrasagar Silk Ltd. in presence of Kiran Rijiju, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Biswajit Daimary, Rajya Sabha MP from Assam and many other dignitaries, on the 22nd of February. The minister also announced the opening of five other important sericulture projects in the BTC area in Assam. Rudrasagar silk Ltd. has installed state of the art machinery and technology for the first time in Eri Silk spinning and one of the salient features of the mill is the facility to produce fancy silk yarns like silk chenille yarn, silk injection slubs yarn, blended yarn etc. to name a few. Rudrasagar Silk also has incorporated the facility to transform ‘waste to wealth’ from Muga Silk reeling waste to high quality Muga Silk spun yarn. The mill is expected to rejuvenate the handloom and sericulture sector of Assam and North East India with diversified and value added products.
