Pursuing complaints on six textile dyeing units located in Sector 49 and 50 of Barola in Uttar Pradesh, the state pollution control board sealed their premises. The alleged violation is that these textile dyeing units are operating their factories without the required pollution control licenses The state pollution control board action was compounded by the district administration.. The administration was backed by the district magistrate who has ordered the disconnection of electricity supply to the six units. The district officials said that the main allegation against these units was that they were releasing polluted water without treating the effluents. A functional effluent treatment plant should be present at the site and should pass the eligibility criteria of the state control Board before receiving the requisite license, the officials said. The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) clarified that the dyeing units are required to set up the effluent treatment plant so that acidic chemicals that are the by –product of color and other raw materials used in dyeing. It is mandatory for all dyeing units to provide proof that they have set up the plant. Citing one other reason, the UPPCB officials contended that these six units were set up in a residential area and this violates the norms. The city magistrate headed the team that inspected the premises of the six units. The team sprung into action following complaints from the locals of Barola that resulted in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to order a thorough investigation. The summary report stated that the six units were allegedly involved in the dyeing of jeans and they released the waste water into the drains without treating them for effluents. BN Singh, the district magistrate informed the media that the local administration takes very strict action against such violations when brought to its notice. It’s very rare that such incidents get reported as we are very strict in implementing the norms. To make sure that violations are not unchecked we encourage the local people to register a complaint with us if any such violations are observed.
