India: Textile and garment park to be set up for women in Mumbai

The Maharashtra state government will soon set up a textile and garment park for women to provide employment opportunities to young women living in government and private shelter homes. The park, which will come up in Mumbai, will also impart training to women aged over 18 years.

The proposal will be finalized by the Women and Child Development ministry that is working together with the Children's Aid Society in this regard. An official from the ministry said the decision was taken to ensure that women who leave shelter homes after the age of 18 have training in some field that can guarantee them a job."There is a bustling apparel market in Mumbai that can be used for this purpose. Apart from being an integrated garment and textile park, it will impart training in the garment and apparel industry to such women. A sizeable chunk of jobs within this park will also be reserved for women," said the official.

The first such park will be set up in Mumbai. Women staying in the nine homes of the CAS, namely the Juvenile Observation Home in Umerkhedi, Chembur Children's Home, Home for Mentally Deficient in Mankhurd, among others, will be given training here. The concept of integrated textile parks was started by the Maharashtra government in August 2011 as a part of its new textile policy. Fourteen such parks have become operational till now. The state government has provided 9 percent capital subsidy for infrastructure development in these 14 textile parks while the Centre's subsidy is Rs 400 million. The private company has to chip in 9 percent share, too.
