TVC Webinar Highlights Need For Creating Awareness About Indian Handlooms

On the occasion of National Handloom Day, Textile Value Chain Media organised a webinar on August 7, 2021. The discussion centered around creating awareness and demand for Indian handlooms. According to Sundar Murugesan, Joint Director, Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC), “India’s rich handloom heritage needs to be promoted not just within the country, but also in the international markets. HEPC can help in this endeavour of the government. We must explore ideas such as Handloom Tourism, wherein we can organise various handloom cluster tours. The Indian government has rightly focussed on the handloom sector with various schemes to promote and support handloom weavers and artisans.” Dr Ela Dedhia, Former Head, Department of Textiles & Fashion Technology, Nirmala Niketan, University of Mumbai, has been championing the cause of Indian handlooms, and has suggested that schools in India should seriously opt for school uniforms made from handloom fabrics. Raghushree Poddar, a Jaipur based designer, is the founder of brand Reme Lifestyle. Reme uses organic handloom fabrics and natural dyes only for its fashion and home textile collections. She reiterated the need for creating consumer awareness about Indian handlooms. “I think all citizens should wear handloom once a week at least. Consumers today have a range of handloom collections to choose from – jumpsuits, kaftans, dresses, etc.” According to Sarfraz Khatri, Owner of Pracheen brand, “There is indeed an urgent need to create more awareness around Indian handlooms, especially in the Indian retail sector, and in the export markets. It would be interesting to see textile and apparel retailers create a handloom corner in their outlets.”
