North Eastern Handicrafts and
Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) has commissioned its Eri Silk
Spinning Plant at the Integrated Textile Park at Kharuajan in Baksa district of
Assam. The Chief Executive Member of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Pramod
Boro inaugurated the plant on 2nd January 2025.
Eri Silk is a domesticated wild
variety of silk which is primarily cultivated in Assam and North Eastern States
of India. Its distinct wool like texture and isothermal properties keeps one
cooler in summer and warmer in winter making it all weather fiber. It is also
known as nonviolent or peace (or Ahimsha) silk as the fiber production do not
necessitates killing of the pupa. NEHHDC’s Eri Silk spinning plant has been set
up with an investment of Rs 15 crore and produce approximately 450 kgs of yarn
per day comprising of both coarse and fine counts in grey and dyed variety. The
spinning machinery line of the plant from Blowroom to Ring Frame is supplied by
LMW while silk degumming and yarn dyeing plants are supplied by Jogindra Industries (Jogson).
During the inaugural speech, BTR
Chief Pramod Boro lauded the project, highlighting its potential to strengthen
the rural economy and its emphasis on creating sustainable livelihoods,
particularly for women traditionally involved in Eri silk cultivation. He also urged
the stake holders to work together to ensure the success of the plant.
He acknowledged the challenges faced
in the cocoon rearing and the shortage of modern machinery to meet the growing
demand of Eri yarns. Further, he underlined the project’s ability to provide
employment opportunities to rural youth, contributing significantly to the
development of the state.
The inauguration ceremony was also
attended by dignitaries like Bhupen Boro, MLA Barama; Rakesh Brahma, EM BTR;
Dhananjay Basumatary, EM, BTR; Daobaisa Boro, EM BTR; Raktim Buragohain, Secretary,
Handloom & Textile, BTC; PVSLN Murthy, CMD, NEDFi; Brigadier (retd) R.K.
Singh MD, NEHHDC along with others.
