Ministry of Textiles Launches “Know Your Weaves” Campaign to Promote India’s Handloom Heritage

The Ministry of Textiles has launched the “Know Your Weaves” campaign, a week-long celebration to mark National Handloom Day 2025. Inaugurated on August 1 at the National Crafts Museum and Hastkala Academy in New Delhi, the campaign runs till August 7 and highlights the diversity and richness of India’s handloom traditions.

Secretary Neelam Shami Rao inaugurated the campaign in the presence of key officials, artisans, educators, and students. She urged the younger generation to engage with India’s indigenous textiles and appreciate the craftsmanship behind them. The campaign features an extensive exhibition of signature weaves including Banarasi, Chanderi, Kanjeevaram, Pochampally, Ikat, and Bhujodi.

Key highlights include live weaving demonstrations, interactive workshops on natural loom techniques, film screenings, and storytelling installations narrating the journey of Indian handlooms. The program also includes school outreach, guided tours, and competitions to inspire textile appreciation among students.

Last year’s campaign attracted over 7,900 students from 58 schools. The 2025 edition aims to build on that success and create deeper engagement between India’s youth and its centuries-old handloom culture. The initiative forms a key component of the national Handloom Day celebrations and reinforces the ministry’s vision to preserve and promote traditional Indian weaving.
