Indonesian Govt. Wants To Move Into Textile Manufacturing

Indonesia’s government, through state fund Danantara, plans a bold US$ 6 billion push to build a fully integrated textile giant, aiming to lift exports from US$ 4 billion to US$ 40 billion in a decade. Equipped with modern machinery and technology, the state-owned monolith hopes to absorb thousands of workers and restore national pride in manufacturing. Yet the plan casts a shadow over struggling private textile producers already battered by cheap imports, especially from China. While the “Goliath” could transform the sector, critics warn it risks crowding out local businesses and worsening the very industry it aims to revive.
