Indonesia’s
government, through state fund Danantara, plans a bold US$ 6 billion push to
build a fully integrated textile giant, aiming to lift exports from US$ 4
billion to US$ 40 billion in a decade. Equipped with modern machinery and
technology, the state-owned monolith hopes to absorb thousands of workers and
restore national pride in manufacturing. Yet the plan casts a shadow over
struggling private textile producers already battered by cheap imports,
especially from China. While the “Goliath” could transform the sector, critics
warn it risks crowding out local businesses and worsening the very industry it
aims to revive.
