German Trade Bodies Launch Strategic Alliance To Shape Incoming Textile Waste Legislation

The German textile industry and retail sector have officially united to influence the upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility regulations. The Confederation of the German Textile and Fashion Industry alongside the German Retail Federation launched the Alliance for Textile Cycles on August 26 2026. This strategic initiative invites various stakeholders across the entire value chain to actively participate in structuring the mandatory waste management architecture. Early supporters already include prominent commercial entities like the Otto Group along with German Fashion and BTE. Organizations from the fashion footwear and home textiles industries alongside research institutions startups and waste management sectors are also highly encouraged to participate in this coalition.

European Union member states must establish mandatory textile collection and recycling systems by April 17 2028 under the revised Waste Framework Directive. Companies placing textiles or footwear on the German national market will face direct financial charges covering the eventual waste management costs of their consumer products. These comprehensive operational costs cover nationwide collection sorting preparation for reuse advanced recycling and final disposal procedures. Producers will see their specific fees eco modulated according to strict sustainability metrics including product durability and total material recyclability. The European Union rules also demand the immediate creation of national producer registers and producer responsibility organizations.

Members strongly advocate transparent cost allocation strictly based on the established polluter pays principle. Genth explained, "It cannot be that German and European companies bear the costs and obligations of an EPR system, while international platforms or providers from third countries remain exempt from these obligations".
