Milliken & Co. has planned to close their Lyman textile unit, which it acquired as part of a larger deal. The company however is expected to find new jobs for the 125 workers.The Lyman plant has a “strong work force,” Milliken spokesperson Barbara Haaksma said. “Very experienced, very skilled. So we look forward to retaining their skills and expertise.” Miliken had purchased this dyeing and finishing unit as part of its purchase of Springfield LLC, a manufacturer of fire-resistant fabric that had competed with Milliken. However the present decision to shut down the Lyman unit has a broader layout in focus. The deal is to bring new technology and manufacturing capacity to Milliken’s long-time business of making fire-resistant fabric. It also allows Milliken a bigger share of the market for fire-resistant fabric.
