A national seminar on recent advances in textile finishing was organised by the Indian Council Of Agricultural Research's (ICAR) Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), in collaboration with the Indian Fibre Society (IFS) on December 17 at the ICAR-CIRCOT Jubilee Hall.
The seminar was attended by more than 100 delegates from research organisations, academia, industry, policy makers and media, according to a release.
There were three technical sessions at the seminar. The technical session on 'An Overview of Textile Finishing' was chaired by textile and management consultant Dr G S Nadiger. A session on 'Functional Finishing of Textiles' was chaired by former CIRCOT Director Dr S Sreenivasan, while eminent textile chemist Dr N Bhattacharyya chaired a session on 'Application Of Plant Materials For Textile Finishing'. On this occasion, three publications, namely ICAR-CIRCOT: An Overview, Book Of Papers and a souvenir of the seminar were released Textile Commissioner of India Dr Kavita Gupta, IAS, who was the chief guest.
She spoke about the present status of Indian textile industry and the importance of value addition to textiles through finishing. She also emphasised the need to be competitive in both domestic as well as international markets.
Speaking about the present huge gap between India and China in the world textile trade, she reminded the audience of India's prime position in textiles in the past and the need to make efforts to regain it. She elaborated about various schemes devised by the government for the benefit of textile industry as well as R&D in textiles, the release stated.
