Tirupur Exporters’ Association Seeks Centre’s Support For Zero Defect Manufacturing

Textile associations and the Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) have requested for support from the central government in order to transform the local textile cluster into India’s zero-defect textile hub.

Responding to the call given by the Prime Minister for making Indian manufacturing sector ‘Zero Defect And Zero Effect’, Tirupur Exporters’ Association President Raja M Shanmugham stated that the Tirupur industrial cluster is taking initiatives to achieve this objective.

Highlighting the major problem which surrounds the industry, Shanmugham said that more than 80% of the industries in this sector are MSMEs, which lack efficiency. Moreover since they operate at a small level, they lack the latest knowledge required to be more efficient.

He said that the knitwear fashion institute NIFT, which was established by apparel exporters have already undertaken several initiatives to equip the industry with latest skills and techniques to achieve a ‘zero defect’ efficiency level.

Raja further added that the Exporters Associations are seeking help from the Central Government to help achieve the aim. “The cluster is in need of a well-planned state-funded initiative. If we are able to achieve even 10% of reduction in wastage and defects, it would help the industry save almost Rs 2,000 crore every year,” he said.

A TEA officer bearer also highlighted the importance of the Centre’s intervention in this regard. “With the Make in India initiative, there is huge potential for apparel MSMEs of our region to excel. The government’s help will definitely add to the productivity of the sector,” he said.

The NIFT and the TEA has estimated that the total cost for the upgradation and skill development would amount to Rs 124 crore.
