Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced a new garment and apparel policy that aims to attract investments worth Rs 20,000 crore.
He also stated that his government would be set up 16 new Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) industrial estates that would generate employment for 100,000, claiming that the policy would create jobs in garmenting among small units.
The policy aims to retain use of cotton grown in Gujarat by boosting the textile value chain from farm to fibre, fabric, fashion and foreign exports.
The Gujarat CM said that the state has an advantage of being largest cotton producer, adding that so far the state has been supplying cotton to other states and it is time to encourage local entrepreneurs to invest in garmenting.
Under the garment and apparel policy 2017, the government plans to incentivise small scale unit owners by way of subsidy in wages. Female employees will get subsidy amounting to Rs 4,000, while their male counterparts will get Rs 3,500.
The Gujarat CM said that since the state already had one of the highest spinning capacities of 2.5 million spindles, Gujarat is poised to become the number one state in the textiles sector again by boosting garment making in the state.
Earlier, the Gujarat state government had extended an existing textile policy by one year, which was otherwise scheduled to expire in September this year.
