Workshop To Familiarise Industry Participants With REACH Registration Formalities

NimkarTek Technical Services Pvt Ltd plans to organise a one-day workshop for the chemical industry on September 1, to be conducted by Dr Dileep Wakankar, who is an acknowledged expert in the field and Chairman of CHEMEXCIL’s REACH Committee. Dr Wakankar is a Technical Adviser at NimkarTek.

NimkarTek Technical Services Pvt Ltd is a training, testing and consultancy company which provides world-class environmental and chemical management services to the textile and leather supply chain.

It also helps brands, retailers and other stakeholders in the supply chain to manage chemical risks by providing high quality reliable training, consultancy and testing services.

Incidentally, the European Union’s (EU) Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations were promulgated in 2007 in order to ensure a high level of protection to human health as well as the environment to achieve sustainable development. It involves identifying and encouraging development of alternatives to chemicals called Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs).

Since REACH regulations have shifted the burden of proof from authorities to the industry, every manufacturer or importer of substances to the EU market must register these substances with the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki, Sweden, and submit a Chemical Safety Report for their intended use.

The REACH registration process began with ‘pre-registration’ of such substances in June 2008 and will culminate in registration of any chemical substance imported into the EU at more than 1 tonne per annum after May 2018.

The registration process involves preparation of technical registration dossiers which include physico-chemical properties, ecological and toxicological data as well as exposure scenarios for all ‘identified uses’ of all substances to be registered, besides joint submission of registration by all Substance Information Exchange Forum (SIEF).

The one-day workshop, which will be conducted at Hotel Satkar Residency in Thane, Maharashtra, on September 1, is expected to familiarise participants with the REACH registration process so as to meet this deadline of May 2018. It will also give a full background of REACH from the perspective of chemical manufacturers as well as the costs involved for the registration process.
