Bangladesh: RMG owners, Labor Unions reach consensus to end unrest over salary revision

Readymade garment (RMG) factory owners and labor Union leaders agreed to work together and bring stability to the garment industry. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers' and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and leaders of labor unions have reached consensus on five points on Saturday and jointly briefed the press.

According to the consensus, both the parties will work jointly to calm down the worker unrest which recently created an impasse in the factories and violent protests across the industrial hubs. The leaders also agreed to thwart any kind of conspiracy against the industry and urged the Government to bring the rumor mongers to book.

The labor leaders urged the wage board authorities to declare new worker wages at the earliest while the owners assured immediate implementation of new wages in their respective factories once it is declared by the wage board. The understanding between the parties also includes the release of salary payment and festival bonus before Eid-ul Azha.

BGMEA president Md. Atiqul Islam, along with former president Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin and over 40 trade union leaders were present at the press meet and addressed the media jointly.
