Textiles Committee Hosts Awareness Workshop On Jute Mark India Scheme In Mumbai

Textiles Committee, an organisation under the Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India organised an awareness workshop under the Jute Mark India (JMI) Scheme in Mumbai on 10th March. This event was aimed to popularise and equip the Artisans, Self Help Group, Jute product manufacturers, exporters and other stakeholders with detailed knowledge of the Jute Mark scheme.

 

The event was graced by Sanjay Waman Sawakare, Minister of Textiles, Govt. of Maharashtra as Chief Guest. He underlined the importance of quality, craftsmanship and authenticity of products to be successful in the global market - a principle that holds true for jute products as well. Further, he assured Govt.’s support to jute based industry in Maharashtra under the state textile policy.

 

Jute Mark India (JMI) scheme was launched on 9th July 2022 by the National Jute Board (NJB) under the Ministry of Textiles which is implemented by Textiles Committee.  The Jute Mark of India label provides a collective identity to the Jute products and assurance of authenticity to the consumers. All registered and approved manufacturers of jute products can use the JMI label for a nominal cost.

 

As the Guest of Honour, Textile Commissioner Roop Rashi highlighted the importance of innovation and diversification in jute products, with a focus on sustainability. She encouraged promoting the “Made in India” initiative on a global scale and elaborated on the benefits of an authentic product label in building consumer trust, expanding market reach, and protecting the interests of stakeholders.

 

Convening the event Kartikay Dhanda, Secretary, Textiles Committee, explains the JMI scheme details and the pivotal role Textiles committee plays as implementing agency of the scheme. Notably, Textiles committee has the responsibility of managing the activities like application processing, on-site verification, issuance of labels, testing of samples and validation etc. He also explains about the Textile Committee’s new initiatives on Textile Recycling and Up-cycling mark, Indian Wool Mark, Kaleen Mark and Pashmina Mark which are backed by the Union Ministry.

The Jute Mark India label can be affixed to any products that contain a minimum of 50% by weight of jute fibre in the product. The label is made of taffeta fabric of the dimension 1 inch by 2 inches that contains JMI logo and a unique QR code. Dr. K.S. Muralidhara, Joint Director, Textiles Committee explained the nitty-gritty of the jute mark and delivered the vote of thanks.
