Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh visited Amarkantak on
November 16 to assess the progress of key initiatives in sericulture, handloom,
handicrafts and textiles across the Amarkantak–Anuppur belt. His review focused
on scheme implementation, livelihood generation and the need for stronger
coordination between central, state and district agencies to accelerate
regional development.
The Minister examined ongoing programmes aimed at expanding
mulberry cultivation, improving cocoon productivity and strengthening market
linkages for tribal silk growers. He also interacted with local weavers and
craftspeople, stressing the importance of modern design support and technology
upgrades to raise income levels in the region. The visit highlighted
Amarkantak’s growing potential as a hub for natural fibre crafts, handloom
clusters and rural textile enterprises.
Industry officials noted that the region could significantly
benefit from targeted interventions under national missions for sericulture,
skill development and MSME competitiveness. The Textiles Ministry aims to
expand opportunities in traditionally underserved districts, aligning its goals
with India’s broader vision for job creation and sustainable rural growth.
Giriraj Singh reiterated that coordinated efforts across
government bodies and community institutions are essential to unlock the
region’s textile capacity and improve long term economic resilience.
