The Wool Research Association (WRA) has taken a major step
in strengthening India’s technical textile capabilities through a new
partnership with Saehan Global Consulting Co., Ltd., South Korea. The two
organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at
developing next generation sustainable fibres for advanced technical textile
applications, particularly in the fast-growing Sportech segment. The Director
General of WRA, Harish Chatterjee signed the MoU on behalf of the WRA.
The collaboration focuses on creating hemp wool blended
performance fibres that combine durability, comfort and eco responsible
characteristics. These fibres are expected to support a new class of high-performance
textile structures used in sports gear, outdoor equipment and protective
apparel. Both organisations will work together to integrate sustainable fibre
processing technologies, backed by global technology transfer to accelerate
commercial adoption.
India’s technical textile market is projected to reach US$
40 billion in the coming years, supported by rising demand in mobility,
defence, sports textiles and industrial applications. WRA’s new partnership
aligns closely with national efforts to promote sustainable material innovation
and expand indigenous research capabilities. Hemp based blends are gaining
attention globally for their low environmental footprint, moisture management
properties and tensile strength, making them a strong contender for high value
Sportech products.
The MoU reinforces WRA’s commitment to delivering scalable,
industry ready solutions that strengthen India’s presence in global technical
textiles. The collaboration also signals deeper India South Korea engagement in
textile innovation, opening pathways for new commercial opportunities.
