The two-day National Textiles Ministers’ Conference began in
Guwahati on Thursday (8 January, 2025), bringing together textile ministers and
senior officials from States and Union Territories to deliberate on the future
direction of India’s textile sector. Organised by the Ministry of Textiles, the
conference is being held under the theme “India’s Textiles: Weaving Growth,
Heritage and Innovation”.
Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh said the Centre is
working in a balanced manner to align production, exports, and sustainability
across the textile value chain. He urged States and Union Territories to frame
investor friendly policies and attract higher investments at the local level.
He also highlighted the government’s focus on accelerating infrastructure and
industrial development in the Northeastern region.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav said India’s
textile industry is expanding rapidly and stressed the need to connect the
artistic skills of Indian craftsmen to global markets. Minister of State for
Textiles Pabitra Margherita said the conference would help build a coordinated
roadmap to strengthen India’s global textile presence. He reiterated the
national target of building a US$350 billion textile economy and noted that the
Northeast contributes nearly 52% of India’s handloom production. The inaugural
session also saw the release of India’s Textile Atlas State Compendium 2025 and
the opening of an exhibition showcasing textile innovation and heritage.
