All States Unite to Elevate India’s Textile Sector at
Guwahati Conference
The two-day National Conference of Textile Ministers held in
Guwahati marked a strong moment of collective resolve for India’s textile
sector. Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh said all States participated
enthusiastically and agreed to work together to take the textile industry to
new heights.
The conference focused on building a shared national vision
that balances growth, heritage, and innovation. Discussions centred on policy
coordination, investment promotion, infrastructure development, and
strengthening traditional strengths such as handlooms, silk, and crafts,
especially across the Northeastern region. The region was highlighted as a
strategic hub due to its rich silk heritage and strong artisanal base.
Government data shows India’s textile and apparel sector
contributes nearly 2% to national GDP and employs over 45 million people
directly. Exports stood at around US$36 billion in the last fiscal year, while
the long-term national ambition targets a US$350 billion textile economy by
2030. Ministers agreed that closer Centre State coordination would be critical
to achieving this scale. The Guwahati deliberations reinforced the spirit of
Atmanirbhar Bharat and Vocal for Local, while positioning Indian textiles for
stronger global competitiveness through sustainable practices and value-added
manufacturing.
