The Ministry of Textiles held a high-level North-Eastern
Region Conclave in Guwahati to review progress and outline a clear roadmap to
accelerate textile sector growth across the eight northeastern states. The
meeting focused on policy coordination, investment mobilisation, skill
development, value addition and stronger market access.
Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh stated that the
North Eastern region remains integral to India’s textile ecosystem and
reaffirmed the Union Government’s commitment to its long-term development.
Ministers, Members of Parliament and senior officials from state and central
governments joined industry institutions to align priorities and execution
strategies.
Deliberations highlighted the region’s strong handloom
heritage, GI tagged products, diverse silk varieties, bamboo-based crafts and
the high participation of women artisans. Data shared at the conclave showed
that the Northeast contributes over 50% of India’s handloom output and remains
central to the domestic silk value chain.
The conference stressed the need to integrate traditional
skills with modern technology, design innovation and export-oriented market
linkages. Participants agreed on building stronger value chains, attracting
private investment and improving infrastructure to raise competitiveness. The
conclave concluded with consensus on coordinated action to position the North
East as a high value textile and craft hub aligned with India’s US$ 350 billion
textile vision.
