The
Israel-US war on Iran is forcing global shipping to scramble for alternatives
as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for oil and trade, becomes
increasingly perilous. Drones, missiles, and fighter jets now loom over tankers
and cargo ships, with Iran threatening to fire on vessels attempting passage.
One
option is the long route around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. While it bypasses
Middle East hotspots entirely, it adds significant cost and transit time.
During past Red Sea and Gulf security disruptions, this route has already been
used to keep trade flowing.
Another
corridor runs through the Red Sea to the Suez Canal, linking the Indian Ocean
to Europe. It remains the fastest route for Persian Gulf energy exports but is
vulnerable at the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a narrow chokepoint connecting the Red
Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Iran
is attempting to provide alternative export points. The Jask oil and gas
terminal on the Gulf of Oman, south of the Strait, has resumed tanker
operations, bypassing the bottleneck. Meanwhile, key islands - Abu Musa,
Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb - serve as bases for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard
Corps, hosting missile batteries, drones, and fast-attack boats. Shipping near
these islands is avoided due to heightened risk.
Analysts
warn that unless diplomatic solutions emerge, global trade and energy flows
will remain under extreme pressure. Ships face longer voyages, higher
insurance, and rising freight costs. Alternative routes provide relief but
cannot match the efficiency and volume of the Strait of Hormuz.
With
mounting disruptions, the world watches as supply chains, energy markets, and
maritime operations navigate one of the most dangerous trade corridors on
Earth.
