EURATEX Urges EU To Delay SUPD Revision, Calls For Evidence Based Review Before Policy Changes

The European Apparel and Textile Confederation (EURATEX) has joined nine leading European industry organisations in urging the European Union to postpone any revision of the Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) until its full impact can be properly evaluated. The joint industry statement argues that reopening the legislation now would create regulatory uncertainty, increase compliance costs and disrupt investment across multiple industries, including textiles.

Industry bodies stressed that many SUPD provisions are still under implementation across Member States. Consumption reduction targets are scheduled for evaluation only in 2026, while reporting methodologies remain inconsistent, making meaningful comparison impossible. The statement warns that revising the Directive prematurely could fragment the Single Market, encourage further regulatory gold plating and create conflicts with major upcoming legislation covering packaging, ecodesign and the future Circular Economy Act.

The joint declaration has been co signed by EURATEX, AIM-European Brands Association, AmCham EU, Cosmetics Europe, Detergents Europe, EDANA, European Plastics Converters (EuPC), European Plastic Films (EuPF), EUROPEN and Plastics Europe. Together, the organisations represent thousands of manufacturers operating across the European industrial ecosystem and advocate a harmonised, science based regulatory framework that balances environmental progress with industrial competitiveness.

The signatories also highlighted that legal uncertainty during a revision process lasting two to three years could delay investments, particularly when businesses are still adapting to recently adopted implementation guidelines. They called on policymakers to complete a comprehensive evaluation based on harmonised evidence before considering legislative changes, ensuring environmental objectives are achieved without undermining Europe's competitiveness, innovation ecosystem or cross border trade.
