In
a landmark development for India's advanced materials and technical textiles
sector, The Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra
Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) for establishing a 120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology
Demonstration Plant at the PM MITRA Park, Amravati, Maharashtra.
The
MoU was formally exchanged between Dr. P. Anbalagan, IAS, Principal Secretary
(Industries, Investment & Services), Government of Maharashtra, and Dr. T.
V. Sreekumar, Director, BTRA, in the esteemed presence of Dr. Sharad Kumar
Saraf, Chairman, BTRA, marking a major milestone in India's journey towards
technological self-reliance in high-performance materials.
The
proposed state-of-the-art facility will serve as a National Centre for Carbon
Fibre Technology Development, integrating:
-120 TPA Carbon Fibre Technology
Demonstration Plant
-Advanced Research & Development
(R&D) Centre
-World-Class Testing & Characterization
Laboratory
-Technology Validation and Scale-up
Facility
-Skill Development & Training Centre
-Industry Support and Technology
Transfer Platform
The
project has been conceived to bridge the critical gap between laboratory-scale
research and commercial manufacturing by enabling pilot-scale production,
process validation, product development, and industrial adoption of indigenous
carbon fibre technology.
Carbon
fibre is one of the world's most strategic advanced materials, finding
extensive applications in aerospace, defence, automotive, renewable energy,
infrastructure, railways, sports equipment, pressure vessels, hydrogen storage,
and other high-performance engineering sectors. The proposed facility is
expected to significantly reduce India's dependence on imported carbon fibre,
promote import substitution, conserve valuable foreign exchange, and strengthen
the country's strategic manufacturing capabilities.
Speaking
on the occasion, Dr. T. V. Sreekumar, Director, BTRA, emphasized that the initiative
will accelerate indigenous technology development, facilitate industry–academia
collaboration, support startups and MSMEs, and create a highly skilled
workforce for the emerging advanced composites ecosystem.
The
initiative is fully aligned with the Government of India's vision of
"Atmanirbhar Bharat", Make in India, and the PM MITRA Scheme,
promoting high-value manufacturing, innovation, and sustainable industrial
growth.
The
signing of the MoU also reinforces Maharashtra's position as a preferred
destination for advanced manufacturing, research, and innovation while
strengthening BTRA's seven-decade legacy of serving the textile, technical
textile, and high-performance materials industries through research, testing,
consultancy, and technology development.
This
landmark collaboration is expected to catalyse a new era of indigenous carbon
fibre manufacturing and position India among the leading nations in advanced
composite technologies.
