India To Showcase Sustainable Jute Apparel At Commonwealth Games 2026 In Historic First

India will make a sustainability statement at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after the National Jute Board (NJB), under the Ministry of Textiles, developed innovative jute viscose blended apparel that will be worn by the Indian contingent during the Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026.

The initiative marks the first time jute-based apparel will be showcased at a major international multi-sport event. The biodegradable fabric was developed in collaboration with Gloster Jute Mills, while the official apparel was designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi. The kit was unveiled in New Delhi in the presence of Union Ministers Giriraj Singh and Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, alongside Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha.

The Commonwealth Games will feature athletes from 72 countries, while India will field a 124-member contingent, including 78 male and 46 female athletes. India remains the world's largest producer of jute, contributing nearly 70% of global production. Officials believe the initiative will strengthen jute diversification, create new export opportunities and reinforce India's leadership in sustainable natural fibre innovation.
