YKK’s US$150 Mln Chennai Plant To Start Up In February 2028

YKK, the global fastening giant held a groundbreaking ceremony on September 25 for its third Indian plant at ORIGINS by Mahindra World City near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is among one of its substantial investments at US$ 150 million.

The new facility will work alongside YKK’s two existing plants in Haryana, creating a broader production network to serve India’s growing domestic market as well as export-oriented manufacturers.

The new plant will spread across 149,936 sq m of land, with a 74,658 sq m building. Construction is scheduled for completion in February 2028.

The company says the state-of-the-art facility will bring together YKK technologies and a wider production capability, allowing it to respond to a broader range of customer requirements.

For India’s apparel and textile industry, the location is significant. Chennai and the surrounding Tamil Nadu manufacturing belt are major hubs for apparel and export-oriented production, putting YKK closer to customers who need zippers, buttons, snaps, hook-and-loop fasteners and other fastening products.

YKK India, established in 1995, currently operates its Indian plant in Bawal and has offices across major textile and apparel centres including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Tirupur, Ahmedabad and Noida.

YKK’s massive manufacturing expansion in India suggests that the company sees the country as an increasingly important global apparel manufacturing hub, backed by strong apparel exports and a large domestic market. India’s improving business environment and government measures to ease manufacturing and trade are also making it a more attractive production base. For YKK, that means not only being closer to a growing customer base, but also having a stronger platform from which to serve export markets across the region.
