The North Eastern
Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. (NEHHDC), under the
Ministry of DoNER, celebrated the 11th National Handloom Day on August 7 at its
Craft Promotion and Experience Centre in Guwahati. The event honoured the
resilience and creativity of tribal women artisans, youth trainees, and
traditional weaving communities from across the Northeast.
Dignitaries included Shri
Bimal Borah, Minister of Industries, Commerce & PE Department, Government
of Assam, along with senior leaders from NEDFi, NECBDC, and the Indian
Institute of Entrepreneurship. National Award-winning weavers were also present,
underscoring the sector’s significance in sustainable livelihoods and cultural
preservation.
The programme featured
policy addresses on market-driven innovation, skill development, and digital
integration in handlooms, alongside cultural performances by youth trainees
under the SAMARTH scheme. NEHHDC in-house weavers, many from tribal backgrounds,
were felicitated for their role in reviving traditional designs.
Showcasing indigenous
materials and techniques from Bodo, Karbi, Dimasa, and Meitei traditions, the
event highlighted handloom as a regenerative economic force. NEHHDC reaffirmed
its commitment to empowering artisan clusters, preserving heritage, and promoting
Northeast textiles in both domestic and global markets.
