Arvind Limited has taken a decisive step toward coal free
manufacturing through a new partnership with Peak Sustainability Ventures to
build India’s first industrial scale cotton stalk torrefaction facility. The
project, located in Gujarat, will process more than forty thousand tonnes of
cotton stalk every year and convert the material into torrefied biomass that
can directly replace coal in Arvind’s industrial boilers.
The investment marks a significant milestone in India’s
climate action efforts at a time when more than five hundred million tonnes of
agricultural waste are generated annually and large volumes remain either
unutilized or burnt in the field. Cotton stalk represents almost eighty five
percent of the cotton plant and is often treated as waste. Arvind works with a
network of more than ninety thousand cotton farmers and already uses stalk as
biomass, and torrefaction will improve its energy density and performance for
industrial use.
The torrefied biomass is expected to replace at least twenty
percent of Arvind’s current coal consumption, with scope for full substitution
in the future. Peak Sustainability Ventures has led reactor design development,
identified a European technology partner specializing in torrefaction and
biochar systems, and is funding the capital expenditure and operations. Arvind
has secured support from the Apparel Impact Institute’s Climate Solutions
Portfolio Grant Program to pilot and scale the model.
The companies view the project as a scalable blueprint for
waste to energy solutions in India’s textile value chain. The platform is
positioned to attract global participation and serve as a catalyst for large
scale decarbonization across agricultural regions and energy intensive
industries.
