Assam’s Silk Sector Emerges As A Strategic Pillar Of India’s Textile Growth

Assam has reinforced its position as India’s silk powerhouse, drawing national attention during the National Textiles Ministers’ Conference held in Guwahati. The state ranks as the third largest silk producing region in the country and remains globally distinctive due to its dominance in specialty silks. Assam contributes nearly 78% of India’s Muga silk and around 77% of Eri silk, both prized for durability, heritage value and sustainability.

Raw silk output reached 6,305 metric tonnes during 2024 to 25, driven largely by Eri production at 6,109 metric tonnes, followed by Muga and Mulberry varieties. The sector provides livelihoods to nearly 30.93 lakh people and spans 10,380 villages, making it one of the most inclusive textile ecosystems in the country. Women artisans form the backbone of this value chain, linking traditional skills to income generation and cultural preservation.

Policy discussions at the conference highlighted Assam’s role in strengthening domestic supply chains, expanding value addition and positioning Indian silk for premium global markets. Industry experts noted that sustained investment, design innovation and stronger market access could significantly raise exports and support India’s ambition to emerge as a global textile hub.
