Parkdale Mills is shutting
down another facility in Stokes County and laying off over 70 people. The
company was formed in Gastonia in 1916 and opened its first spinning mill two
years later. It grew to become one of the world’s largest spun yarn
manufacturers with 29 plants across US, Mexico and South America, employing
over 4,500 workers.
Parkdale Mills said the
plant closure and layoffs are due to increasing energy costs that have led to
an economically unsustainable business model. In the last decade, the company
had closed several mills in different locations due to similar reasons.
