Padma Doree Unites Northeast Silk And Chanderi Weaves

India has launched a new cross-regional textile initiative, Padma Doree, bringing together the Eri (Ahimsa) silk traditions of Northeast India and the Chanderi weaving heritage of Madhya Pradesh.

The initiative was unveiled by Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), under the broader vision of Ek Bharat Shreshth Bharat. He said the project reflects both heritage and innovation, linking two distinct textile ecosystems into one collaborative platform.

Developed by NEHHDC, the project highlights Eri silk’s sustainable, cruelty-free production and blends it with Chanderi’s fine motifs and craftsmanship.

The launch featured a fashion show and curated exhibition showcasing the fusion textiles, along with live demonstrations by artisans from both regions.

Officials said the initiative aims to promote sustainable luxury, indigenous knowledge systems and stronger inter-regional craft linkages. The three-day exhibition also allows visitors to engage directly with artisans and experience the full fibre-to-fabric journey.
